“Writers see the world differently. Every voice we hear, every face we see, every hand we touch become
story fabric.”
- Buffy Andrews
I'd love to say I grew up with a typewriter in my hands, but that would be a lie. In fact, I went to Marquette University with an eye toward advertising within their J school thinking it wouldn't involve long form copy. Funny how things turn out, and after 30+ years, a few in advertising administration and project management, I have not just copywriting, but also journalism, features writing, editing, blogging, public relations writing, social media and web content experience, and most recently grant writing. Literally at my fingertips. I guess it could be said that I didn't always want to BE a writer, but I always WAS a writer. But you came for specifics, so read on...
WORK EXPERIENCE
2010-Present
Freelance and Contracting as Denise Konkol
This, folks is what you call "my baby." In a more practical sense, it was the evolution of me filling requests to help others out with social media, blogging, proofreading, press releases, email marketing, etc. whenever I wasn't employed with a "normal job." It's kind of stuck, even though I'm quite open to working for a great company that fosters creative and innovative thinking.
2017-2024
ER2/Revive IT
So I took the literal desert journey and moved to Arizona, and found an amazing company that was growing, and I became their office and engagement manager. In a small but growing company that meant wearing a lot of hats, and since starting in August of 2017, I assisted their marketing team with blogs, press releases, and other website content and QC. I am also taking on familiar roles in events planning as it relates to employee engagement and volunteerism. I remain available to clients as well, and struck a great balance between the two callings.
Executive Assistant to the Mayor, City of Muskego (WI)
2014-2015
A little clerical, but also a great fit as I got to work with people, manage the city's social media and add to their website as needed. Editing and writing also got involved in a joint City/School newsletter
Interim Executive Director, Muskego Chamber of Commerce
2013-2014
After Patch, I was asked to step into the role of Interim ED at the Muskego Chamber. It was an honor to be asked, and much of my experience as an editor made it a natural fit. I managed the operations of the 7th largest chamber in the region, including events coordination, fundraising, planning, promotions, newsletter writing and a host of other hats.
Editor, Patch Media Corp/Aol
2011-2013
A one-woman army to deliver the news for my hometown on a website and in social media. I was responsible for delivering the news, 24/7, 365. And I loved it. Interviewing just about everyone in a small town allows you to connect people with each other to create new collaborations, which is exciting. Our little website outscooped the long-standing print publication daily, and we garnered a monthly unique visitor count of 17,000 in a town of 24,000. The business model however soon did away with local editors, although the site is still live.
EDUCATION/Training/Volunteerism
2017-2019
Mesa Leadership Training and Development Communications Chair
